His friends Matthew Mugg, the Irish Cat 's Meat Man, young Tommy Stubbins, Chee-Chee the chimpanzee, Polynesia the parrot and Jip the dog set out on an expedition to find the Great Pink Sea Snail, after the good doctor has been imprisoned in England because his love for the. animals was misunderstood.
After many adventures, including being shipwrecked on a cannibal island, they find the Great Pink Sea Snail who promises to transport them back to England in its spacious shell, after Sophie the seal has told them that the animals at home have gone on a massive strike over the injustice done to him and that the authorities are imploring him to return.
