ROGER WATKINSON REPORTING

The Ever Expanding Library THE COPYING of films is an expensive process, especially when the cost has to be recovered over a long period of time through hire charges. It is very much appreciated, therefore, when members of the Institute donate films to the library, so long as they are representative of the best of present day amateur films.

8072s, The Wheel, donated by a film group that produced it at an Alston Hall Film Making Course and 8073s Disneyland, made by John Fernée are two such recent additions.

A revised Film Catalogue has now been prepared and is available from Head Office in Ashtead, price 25p.

Forty-nine films make up the 8min sound- on-stripe section of the library which was started in 1968. During the same period 61 films have been added to the l6mm section.

Within the limits of available finance, every effort is being made to keep the library up to date as it is the only one fully representative of amateur film making.

Regional and National Events

There are three major events during October and November in the IAC calendar. The South East Regional Film Competition and AGM on Saturday, October 7, the North East Regional York Film Festival and the National IAC Weekend and AGM.

The first event is likely to be over by the time some of you receive this edition of Movie Maker. You will just have time to obtain tickets for the other two and arrange overnight accommodation.

York Film Festival has become an annual event that is looked forward to by over 200 film enthusiasts from all over the country. In the main, it is a social function with a movie flavour. In previous years the venues have been the Merchant Tailors Hall, St John's College and the Chase Hotel. This year it has been decided to hold all the events except one under a single roof, namely the Viking Hotel, North Street, York. Special rates have been arranged for accommodation (with bathrooms) which can be booked direct with the hotel, mentioning the IAC Festival.

The weekend commences Saturday, October 28, with a lunch at 12.45 pm in the hotel, followed by a visit to the National Railway museum at 2.15 pm. Afternoon tea in the West and East Riding rooms has been arranged at 4.15 pin where there will be an opportunity to meet various IAC Regional and National Officials. A Reception will be held (7.30 for 8 pm) in the Dublin Room prior to a Dinner-Dance until 1 am, dancing to the hotel's own band. There will be the usual display of the latest movie and sound equipment, together with demonstrations, at the premises of John Saville and Son, Goodramgate, from 10.30 to 12.30 pm. Lunch at 12.45 pin will be served in the Jorvik Restaurant. Sidney Manasseh, IAC Film Librarian, will talk about and show some of his films which have become International Award winners. This will be in the hotel's own air-conditioned cinema with its 250 upholstered seats.

There will be a buffet tea between 5 and 6 pm, and at 7 pm the award winning films from the North East Regional Annual film competition will be presented.

As can be seen, it is a full weekend open to all cine enthusiasts (full IAC Members receiving a discount) and their wives, who can take time off to wander around historic York. I can thoroughly recommend this function as something special. Further details and brochure can be obtained from the Secretary of the North East Region, Geoffrey Aspinall, High Royd Cottage, Northgate, Honley, Nr Huddersfield, Yorkshire.

The IAC Bumper weekend, November 3 to 5, is a joint weekend of the North Thames AGM, the National IAC AGM and film shows, to be held at the Esso Motor Hotel, South Minims.

The Weekend commences with a Reception Time at 7 pin, films and chat. The North Mr A. C. Webb of 3 Freeland Road, Ealing, London W5 is looking for a shot of a computer in operation on standard 8 - duration about 10 seconds. Alternatively, he would like to hear from anyone who would give him permission to take the required shot himself. Thames Annual Film Competition runners- up will be shown at 8.30 pm, followed at 9.30 pin by the winners. On Saturday morning two rooms will hold different functions: Regional Sessions in the Alban Suite and three shows of a short programme of films in the Shenley Suite.

After lunch, the IAC AGM will be held at 2.45 pm. David Blagdon, the guest speaker will follow. There will be a dinner in the evening (7.45 pin for 8.15 pin). 10.30 am on Sunday will see the guests assembled in the Alban suite once again, this time for the Mermaid Film Competition, judged by the audience, with entries from each of the Regions. The North Thames AGM will be held in the afternoon, alongside which will be another film show. The weekend closes at 4 pm. Further details and tickets available from Head Office, 63 Woodfield Lane, Ashtead, Surrey.
